the Kingdom of Savoy

In 1388 the County of Savoy fought its way to the coast at Nice and so established a maritime port for the first time. The Duchy that was to follow added this magnificent part of Europe to the Holy Roman Empire. Later this came to form the nucleus of modern Italy, with Turin as its capital.

To the South of Turin lies the idyllic wine and truffle producing region of the Langhe. Here small fortified villages, decorated with fine castles and villas that were once homes to members of Italy’s most important aristocracy of the nineteenth century, dominate the steep sided vineyards bearing some of the world’s most famous names: Barolo and Barbaresco.

Our walk leads us through some of these delightful towns across deep valleys to castle-topped hills and down long ridges with fine views over superbly manicured vineyards. We stay in charming and historic inns and find the unparalleled cuisine of this most Epicurean of Italian regions.
